We have a highly skilled, experienced and diverse workforce at AQMetrics. Today, we introduce you to our Senior Quantitative Developer, Andrew Fox.

Senior Quantitative Developer since June 2014. I’m a maths/risk guy.

Describe your job in three words.

Focused, challenging, rewarding.

What are you working on right now?

Since early this year we have been building software for the liquidity stress test regulations that are coming into force for UCITs and AIF funds in September 2020. We are fine tuning now in preparation for the September go live. It’s definitely a fascinating area. While fund liquidity had been on the radar for regulators for some time now, the rapid market sell-off in March, which could have been much, much worse were it not for the swift actions of central banks, has meant it’s more important than ever. I don’t think it’s an issue that’s going away anytime soon. So, funds really need to think about how they can handle any liquidity risks, and how they’re going to meet the new ESMA liquidity stress test requirements.

What does a typical day look like?

Every day is different. But if i had to describe a typical day, I would say it consists of 80% writing code, while 20% would be dedicated to meetings and assisting colleagues with other aspects of the business. As the person responsible for a lot of the core analytics of the software, I spend most of my time codifying logic… this typically starts off as “pen and paper” research, which generally results in a series of equations to be transcribed into working production code. Value at risk (VaR) models, Stress simulations, general market risk, and the ins and outs of derivatives are some of the things I enjoy.

How has your background helped with your role in AQMetrics?

My background was originally Theoretical Physics which then evolved into Computer Science, so my current role as quantitative developer couldn’t be more appropriate.

Best thing about working in AQMetrics?

The team makes it. Everyone is open-minded, down to earth, good humoured and most importantly willing to help anyone else at the drop of a hat. It’s a great environment for productivity, and a notable factor in why we produce great software. And even if we are all working remote, we have regular catch-ups and are always chatting to each other on Slack, so there is still camaraderie among us.

Who would you most like to swap places with for the day and why?

Maynard James Keenan, the lead singer of Tool / Perfect Circle / Puscifer.. Musically – the man’s a genius, and he also produces delicious wine. What’s not to love.

What websites do you visit the most?

Carzone probably – I have an urge to buy a classic vintage car at the moment.

Tell us something about yourself we don’t know.

I’m a classically trained tenor.
